Air India receives first line-fit Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in over eight years

Tata Group-owned Air India has taken delivery of a brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner built specifically for the airline, marking its first such Dreamliner induction in more than eight years. This is also the first wide-body aircraft delivered to Air India since its privatisation in 2022 .

The aircraft was handed over at Boeing’s Everett factory in Seattle on January 7 and is expected to arrive in India in the coming days after inspections by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Air India’s new Dreamliner features a three-class configuration business, premium economy, and economy underlining the airline’s efforts to enhance passenger comfort on long-haul international routes.

The delivery forms part of Air India’s massive fleet expansion and modernisation plan . In 2023, the airline placed orders for 220 Boeing aircraft , with this Dreamliner being the 52nd delivered under the agreement. Additionally, the Tata Group has ordered 350 Airbus planes , including six A350s that are already in service. The Air India Group currently operates over 300 aircraft , including planes from Air India Express and the merged Vistara fleet.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a long-range, wide-body, twin-engine aircraft designed for efficiency, passenger comfort, and modern safety standards. Constructed with composite materials such as carbon fiber, it is lighter and stronger than traditional planes. The Dreamliner comes equipped with advanced avionics, redundant safety systems, modern autopilot, collision-avoidance technology, fire suppression systems, and weather radar, meeting international safety norms from authorities like the FAA, EASA, and DGCA.

Air India’s aircraft carries passengers in three cabins: Business Class with lie-flat seats and advanced entertainment systems, Premium Economy with wider seats and extra legroom, and Economy Class with modern amenities, LED lighting, and improved air quality for longer flights. The 787-9 can typically accommodate 290–330 passengers and fly up to 7,530 nautical miles non-stop , ideal for long-haul international routes.

The aircraft also offers enhanced passenger comfort with larger electronically dimmable windows, quieter engines, and optimized cabin pressure and humidity levels, reducing fatigue on extended journeys. Its fuel-efficient engines allow airlines to operate longer routes economically, supporting Air India’s ambitions to expand non-stop global connectivity.

Overall, the induction of this line-fit Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner signals Air India’s renewed focus on international travel, upgraded onboard services, and rebuilding its global reputation after years of limited fleet additions under government ownership. A dozen more legacy Dreamliners with refreshed interiors are expected to return to service throughout 2026, further strengthening the airline’s long-haul capabilities.
