Air India, IndiGo Aircraft Wingtips Touch on Mumbai Taxiway, Both Planes Grounded
The wingtips of two passenger aircraft, one operated by Air India and the other by IndiGo made contact on the ground at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on the evening of February 3, 2026 while both planes were carrying passengers. The incident occurred as the Air India flight AI 2732 , bound for Coimbatore , was taxiing for departure and was waiting on the taxiway, and the IndiGo flight 6E 791 , which had arrived from Hyderabad , was taxiing after landing. The right wingtips of the Airbus A320 aircraft touched each other during these ground movements, resulting in minor structural contact and dents on the wingtip areas of both planes.
Both aircraft were immediately taken out of service and returned to their respective bays for detailed inspection and maintenance checks by technical teams, as a standard safety precaution following such ground contact incidents. A spokesperson for Air India confirmed that the contact caused damage to its aircraft’s wingtip and led to a delay in the departure of flight AI 2732. IndiGo also acknowledged that its aircraft’s wingtip touched another plane while taxiing and that it was undergoing maintenance inspection.
Despite the unusual nature of the event, all passengers and crew on board both flights were reported safe , with no injuries. After the planes parked, passengers were safely disembarked in accordance with normal procedures. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) , India’s aviation regulator, dispatched officials from its Mumbai office to the site to investigate the circumstances of the contact and to assess compliance with aviation safety protocols. The DGCA typically reviews such incidents to help prevent similar events in the future and ensure that ground movement operations at busy airports remain safe and efficient.
Airport operations continued as usual after the incident was managed, highlighting standard industry practices for handling ground safety issues at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
