Air India implements fare caps, offers relief amid IndiGo flight crisis
Amid the ongoing operational crisis at IndiGo Airlines that has caused widespread flight cancellations and delays across India, the government’s new emergency rules capping ticket prices came into effect on December 8, 2025. In response, Air India has become the first major carrier to implement these guidelines, offering relief to domestic travelers.
The domestic aviation sector has recently faced immense pressure due to IndiGo’s flight cancellations, staff shortages, and operational delays. To protect passengers from steep fares during this period, the Ministry of Civil Aviation introduced special regulations limiting ticket prices on key domestic routes.
Air India announced that it has already adopted these new pricing rules, ensuring fares on busy routes between major cities remain stable. Additionally, the airline is adding extra flights and seats to accommodate more passengers and reduce travel disruptions.
Experts say Air India’s move will be a significant relief for travelers, especially with the upcoming festive season when demand for air travel typically spikes. Railways have also stepped in, running 89 special trains to ease passenger load. With flight fares now regulated and additional services added, travelers are set to benefit from both air and rail options during this challenging period.
