Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson has resigned from his position , a source said, in a move that appears to be part of a broader leadership transition at the Tata Group-owned airline.

Wilson, who took charge in July 2022 , conveyed his decision to step down to the Board, which accepted his resignation, the source added. An official confirmation from Air India was awaited .

While no official reason has been disclosed, sources indicated that Tata Group had been scouting for a successor earlier this year , even though Wilson’s tenure was set to run until 2027. This suggests the resignation is likely part of a planned leadership transition rather than a sudden development.

Campbell Wilson was appointed CEO and Managing Director of Air India after Ilker Ayci, the former Turkish Airlines executive, declined the role in 2022. Wilson led the airline during a critical phase of revival and modernisation under the Tata Group, following its acquisition from the government, focusing on operational restructuring, service enhancement, and global network expansion .

The exit also comes amid ongoing operational and restructuring challenges , including fleet expansion, service upgrades, and integration of airline businesses. Such large-scale transformation efforts often result in leadership changes , industry observers note.

Additionally, during Wilson’s tenure, the airline came under scrutiny following the June 12 crash of a London-bound Boeing 787-8 from Ahmedabad that killed 241 people . While no direct link has been established between Wilson and the incident , the tragedy intensified pressure on the airline’s management to review safety and operational protocols .

Meanwhile, Air India Express remains without a head following the exit of its Managing Director Aloke Singh last month. The development highlights Air India’s continuing transition phase under Tata ownership.
