
AI-Powered system to guard forest villages from Elephant intrusions in Andhra
A new phase in Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to manage rising human–wildlife conflict has begun with the launch of an AI-based, solar-powered elephant detection and deterrence system in the Chittoor Forest Division. The initiative has been introduced under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who oversees the Forest and Environment Department.
The system, designed to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for identifying elephant movement, marks a major technological upgrade in wildlife management. Each unit provides 120-degree coverage with a 60-meter range, enabling continuous monitoring of forest boundaries and farmlands. When elephants are detected, the devices automatically trigger non-harmful deterrents, such as mild sound and light signals, and send real-time alerts to forest officials and nearby villagers.
Officials said the new system is expected to significantly reduce crop damage and prevent human–animal encounters. The technology runs entirely on solar power, allowing uninterrupted operation in remote forest areas.
From Traditional Kumkis to Smart Sensors
The initiative builds upon earlier conservation efforts in the region. In October 2023, four trained Kumki elephants—Giri, Sugreeva, Parthiban, and Venkatesh—were brought from the Mathigodu Elephant Camp in Kodagu, Karnataka, through inter-state cooperation. The Kumkis were stationed at the Siddeswaram Forest Camp in Chittoor district, where they have since assisted forest teams in safely guiding wild elephant herds back to their habitats.
Forest officials said that the combination of traditional Kumki support and AI technology represents a balanced approach that combines compassion with innovation. While Kumkis continue to be deployed during high-conflict situations, the AI sensors are being used for round-the-clock surveillance and early warning.
Existing Measures and the New Approach
Before the introduction of this system, monitoring in Chittoor Division largely depended on infrared and night-vision cameras, drone surveillance, and manual patrols. These methods required continuous human observation and had limited range. In some areas, sound deterrents, such as recorded bee noises and sirens, were used to keep elephants away from villages.
The AI-based detection system now provides a proactive and automated solution, reducing dependency on manual monitoring. Officials from the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department confirmed that the system has been deployed in Kuppam, Palamaner, and Bangarupalem ranges—identified as the most vulnerable areas for elephant intrusion.
Pilot Phase and Expansion Plans
According to the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department’s 2024–25 Wildlife Management Plan, the project is being implemented as a pilot initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Based on its effectiveness in Chittoor Division, the technology may later be extended to Tirupati Wildlife Division and Kadapa District, particularly along the Seshachalam forest corridor.
The department has targeted a 50 percent reduction in elephant-related conflicts within the first year of implementation. Data from the pilot phase will be used to design long-term strategies, including habitat restoration and corridor-based planning for elephant movement across southern Andhra Pradesh.
Scope and Limitations
Experts believe the new system will substantially reduce human–elephant encounters, though it may not eliminate them entirely. Field studies from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where similar early-warning systems were tested, have shown a 60–70 percent decline in conflict incidents.
However, forest officials have acknowledged that the system’s success will depend on terrain conditions, signal coverage, and regular maintenance. Elephants, known for their intelligence, may adapt to repetitive deterrents over time, requiring periodic recalibration of the devices. Officials emphasized that human vigilance and rapid response teams will continue to be vital components of conflict management.

The deployment of AI-based monitoring systems in Chittoor Division has been described by officials as a blend of modern technology and humane conservation practice. The initiative is being carried out under the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan overseeing its implementation.
