AIMIM Walkout During ‘Vande Mataram’ Sparks Political Row in Telangana Assembly

A political storm has erupted in the Telangana Assembly after members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) staged a walkout during the rendition of “Vande Mataram” in the ongoing budget session , transforming a routine legislative moment into a flashpoint for a wider ideological clash.

The controversy unfolded during the Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s address , which followed new procedural norms mandating the singing of state and national songs , including “Jaya Jaya He Telangana,” “Vande Mataram,” and the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana.” While AIMIM legislators were present and stood during the initial renditions before the address, they exited the House when “Vande Mataram” was played again at the conclusion , triggering sharp political reactions.

Leading the criticism, BJP leader Prakash Reddy termed the walkout a direct insult to the nation , questioning the party’s commitment to constitutional values and national unity . He argued that such actions reflect a deeper ideological disconnect , raising concerns over AIMIM’s repeated opposition to the national song.

Adding fuel to the controversy, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar launched a scathing attack, calling the move “shameful.” In a post on X, he said the walkout was not merely a protest but a direct insult to the national song and the spirit of the motherland . Bandi Sanjay Kumar further questioned why the party appeared to have an “allergy to Indian symbols,” asserting that the incident had exposed its true stance . His remarks intensified the political discourse surrounding the issue.

However, a contrasting perspective came from Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai , who urged restraint in framing the episode as a test of patriotism. While affirming that national symbols deserve respect , he emphasized that such expressions cannot be imposed , arguing that patriotism must remain voluntary in a democratic society.

Notably, there was no immediate response from AIMIM to the allegations. With both sides holding firm positions, the episode has evolved into a broader national debate , reflecting the ongoing tension between collective identity, political expression, and individual freedom in India’s democratic framework.
