Nisha Mehta , an alumna of the College of Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi , has been appointed as the Health Minister of Nepal , an official statement said on Sunday.

AIIMS hailed her achievement as a moment of pride for the institution and the broader nursing community , noting that her journey from bedside nursing to a key policy-making role underscores the expanding leadership potential of nurses .

During her time at AIIMS, Mehta pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from 2006 to 2010 . The institution highlighted her exceptional leadership qualities , active participation in academic and co-curricular activities , and strong sense of responsibility , all of which have shaped her path toward higher leadership and public service .

The statement emphasised that Mehta’s appointment reflects the vital role nurses play not only in patient care but also in shaping healthcare policies and systems at both national and global levels . AIIMS extended its best wishes to her for a successful tenure and impactful contributions to public health in Nepal .

Mehta took oath on March 27, 2026 , following the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP)’s landslide victory in the March 5 polls, securing 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives. This marks the formation of Nepal’s first democratically elected government since the coalition led by former Prime Minister K P Oli was ousted in September last year.

The change in government followed youth-led Gen Z protests against corruption, nepotism, and social media restrictions , which had escalated into widespread unrest.

Mehta’s rise to a ministerial position highlights the growing recognition of nurses as policy influencers and leaders in the healthcare sector, reinforcing the profession’s crucial role in shaping the future of public health.
