AIIMS Nagpur Opens Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre to Safeguard International Travellers
In a significant step toward strengthening India’s preventive healthcare framework, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur has inaugurated a dedicated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre , aimed at facilitating safe international travel while preventing the potential entry of the disease into the country. The facility, launched on April 23, 2026, has been approved by the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The initiative comes amid growing global mobility and continued prevalence of yellow fever in parts of Africa and South America. Although India remains a non-endemic country, vaccination is mandatory for travellers visiting regions where the disease is widespread. Health authorities view such measures as critical to both safeguarding individuals and maintaining national biosecurity against imported infections.
Yellow fever is a vector-borne viral disease caused by an arbovirus of the flavivirus genus and transmitted primarily through infected Aedes mosquitoes . The disease continues to pose a public health challenge in several tropical regions, making immunisation a key requirement for international travel. The newly inaugurated centre is expected to streamline access to vaccination and certification, particularly for residents of central India.
Located at the Adult Immunisation Clinic, Room No. 24 on the ground floor of the IPD block at AIIMS Nagpur, the centre operates through a structured process. Individuals must first complete an online registration form, following which their eligibility verification is conducted. Confirmed beneficiaries are informed of their vaccination schedule via email or phone. On the day of vaccination, travellers are required to present a signed consent form along with proof of travel, including a passport and relevant medical records .
The vaccination is administered upon completion of outpatient registration and payment, which includes a nominal fee of ₹300 for the vaccine and ₹10 for OPD services. After receiving the dose, individuals are kept under observation for 30 minutes as a precautionary measure. A valid international vaccination certificate is then issued, which becomes effective after 10 days and remains valid for the individual’s lifetime .
The centre will function every Thursday, excluding government holidays, with registration open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and vaccination sessions continuing until 12:30 PM. This scheduled approach is designed to ensure efficient service delivery while maintaining clinical safety standards.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director Prashant P. Joshi described the initiative as a crucial advancement in preventive healthcare. He noted that the facility would not only support travellers from Maharashtra but also cater to neighbouring states such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, enhancing regional healthcare accessibility.
The establishment of the Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre reflects India’s proactive approach to public health preparedness in an increasingly interconnected world. By enabling compliance with international health regulations and strengthening disease prevention , the move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring both individual safety and broader public health security.
