AIADMK at 55: Can Palaniswami Turn Setbacks into a Comeback?
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) entered its 55th year of formation on October 17, with General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami urging party workers to remain united and overcome political challenges through democratic means. Despite the emergence of Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), internal divisions and the departure of prominent leaders, AIADMK retained a significant electoral base in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 47 of the 234 seats.
In his foundation-day message, Palaniswami paid tribute to party founder M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, calling on cadres to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights and work towards good governance. He said the party had completed 54 years and urged workers to carry forward its founding ideals with renewed determination.
Founded by MGR on October 17, 1972, following his split from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), AIADMK became a major political force after winning the 1977 Assembly elections. MGR led the party to further victories in 1980 and 1984. Following his death in 1987, Jayalalithaa consolidated the organisation and led it to power in 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2016.
After Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, Palaniswami emerged as the party’s principal leader. AIADMK won 66 seats in 2021 but secured 47 in 2026, a decline of 19 seats. Its vote share fell from 33.29% to 21.21%. The DMK experienced a sharper decline, dropping from 133 seats in 2021 to 59 in 2026, while TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats. The results suggest that, despite its setbacks, AIADMK retains the potential to rebuild as a credible alternative to the new government.
The party’s challenges deepened when TVK won the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections in October, pushing AIADMK into third place. Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam joined the DMK in February, while V. K. Sasikala launched her own party in March, adding to the fragmentation of the wider AIADMK political camp.
As the party enters its 55th year, Palaniswami’s appeal for unity assumes greater significance. Preventing defections, rebuilding grassroots support, attracting younger voters and developing effective alliances will be crucial if AIADMK hopes to regain political ground and challenge both TVK and DMK in the next election.
