OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has cautioned that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to the replacement of certain job categories, emphasizing the need for adaptation and reskilling. Speaking at recent tech events, Altman highlighted that roles involving repetitive tasks, particularly in customer service and telecommunication, are among the first to face automation.

However, Altman stressed that jobs requiring human empathy, emotional intelligence, and personal interaction, such as nursing and caregiving, are less likely to be affected by AI. “Professions where human touch matters will remain resilient against automation,” he said.

He urged individuals to acquire AI-related skills to remain competitive in the changing job market. According to him, workers who learn to collaborate with AI tools will enjoy a significant advantage over those who resist technological change.

Altman also addressed the future of programming roles, noting that while AI can enhance software development productivity, routine coding tasks may gradually become automated. This, he said, could alter demand for traditional software engineering positions.

Expressing concern for older workers, Altman pointed out that individuals nearing retirement may struggle to adapt to new technologies, highlighting the importance of lifelong learning across all age groups.

The AI chief’s remarks serve as a stark reminder that the workforce must embrace continuous learning to navigate the rapidly evolving employment landscape shaped by artificial intelligence.
