Fast forward to today, and we may have found a solution to Bloom's problem: Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is rapidly changing the education landscape by offering a way to provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring to millions of students. AI-powered tutors can adapt to each student's unique learning style, pace, and needs, making high-quality, customized education accessible to all.

The Importance of personalized tutoring: Insights from Bloom's study

The core principle of Bloom's "2 Sigma Problem" is mastery learning. The research highlights that in traditional classrooms, students are often pushed to the next topic even if they haven't fully grasped the current one. This creates a cumulative knowledge gap, where students who fall behind struggle to catch up. In contrast, one-to-one tutoring allows for a mastery-based approach. Examples of these tools include Khanmigo by Khan Academy, which provides conversational tutoring, and Duolingo, an AI-powered language learning platform. Other examples are Socratic (by Google) and Quizlet, which offer homework help and personalized study materials, respectively. These tools are designed to supplement, not replace, the role of human educators, making learning more efficient and accessible for everyone.

In essence, AI helps to solve the "2 Sigma Problem" by making personalized, mastery-based tutoring universally available. It allows students to learn at their own pace and in a way that is most effective for them. By providing constant support and customized learning paths, AI can bridge the gap between classroom teaching and one-to-one tutoring, ensuring every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
