AI enters election arena as hologram Vijay amplifies TVK campaign push
In a striking blend of technology and politics , Tamil Nadu has witnessed a new form of campaigning, a life-sized 3D hologram of actor-turned-politician Vijay addressing voters on behalf of his party.
The innovation was first rolled out in the Kumbakonam Assembly constituency on April 12, where TVK candidate Vinoth Ravi used the digital projection of the party chief during an election outreach programme ahead of the April 23 polls.
The hologram, projected from a campaign vehicle, created a near-real appearance of the leader delivering a synchronised speech. Crowds gathered in large numbers, drawn by the illusion of physical presence across locations.
Party functionaries said the move was driven by logistical constraints , as the party is contesting in over 200 constituencies. A senior leader said the idea emerged from discussions on extending the leader’s reach beyond physical limits, evolving into an AI-enabled campaign experiment .
A 20-year-old AI student, who helped develop the prototype, said a short AI-generated speech video was converted into a hologram projection in just three days. He added that the setup could cost around ₹2-3 lakh depending on scale.
Political observers believe the initiative is aimed at attracting young voters and positioning TVK as a technology-driven alternative to traditional campaign styles used by parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Meanwhile, the real Vijay continues limited physical campaigning, attending select rallies under tight schedules due to multi-constituency demands.
The campaign also reflects a wider trend of digital experimentation , including mannequins and lookalikes used earlier by party cadres to maintain visibility.
With the Election Commission of India allowing restricted campaigning hours, parties are increasingly exploring innovative ways to maximise outreach.
As Tamil Nadu heads toward polling in all 234 constituencies, the hologram campaign signals a new political era, where digital presence is becoming as powerful as physical rallies.
