After Safety Upgrades, Chinnaswamy Stadium Gets Green Signal for IPL 2026
The Government of Karnataka on Monday granted final clearance to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru to host matches of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, ending months of uncertainty following last year’s tragic crowd stampede during the team’s maiden title celebrations. The approval came after authorities reviewed extensive safety , security and infrastructure improvements at the stadium.
Earlier, the government had issued only a conditional NOC allowing a limited number of matches while stadium arrangements were being evaluated. After fresh inspections and compliance checks, officials have now granted full approval for IPL fixtures at the venue, clearing the way for Bengaluru to host key matches of the tournament.
The decision followed a high-level meeting chaired by Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar, where a state-appointed Expert Committee presented a detailed report on the stadium’s preparedness . Representatives from KSCA, RCB and event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks also participated in the review meeting.
Authorities said the committee conducted comprehensive evaluations , including mock demonstrations of match-day crowd management , evacuation procedures and coordination among police , emergency services and stadium authorities. Enhanced surveillance , improved entry and exit arrangements and stronger barricading systems were also examined before granting approval.
Officials also reviewed facilities for spectators, including medical support, emergency response mechanisms and logistical arrangements such as accommodation for players, officials and visiting teams. The upgrades were considered crucial to ensure safe conduct of large sporting events at the stadium.
With the clearance in place, defending champions RCB will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the tournament opener of the 2026 IPL on March 28 in Bengaluru. The stadium will also host the league’s opening ceremony and the popular RCB Unboxing event , which marks the start of the season.
RCB are scheduled to play five of their seven home matches in Bengaluru, while two games will be staged at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur. The government’s decision ensures Bengaluru remains a key IPL venue while prioritising public safety and event management standards.
