After Historic Kerala Win, Satheesan Meets Congress Leadership in Delhi

FBarely days after taking oath as Kerala’s Chief Minister, V D Satheesan arrived in New Delhi for a politically significant visit that underscored both the Congress party’s renewed confidence in Kerala and the challenges that lie ahead for the newly formed government. During his first visit to the national capital after assuming office , Satheesan met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge , senior party strategist K C Venugopal , former Congress president Sonia Gandhi , Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi , and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the party began charting its next course after a landmark electoral victory.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power in Kerala after ten years by securing a sweeping mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, a victory widely seen as one of the Congress party’s biggest political comebacks in recent years . Satheesan, who served as Leader of the Opposition before the polls, emerged as the central face of the campaign and built a strong public connect through an aggressive anti-LDF campaign that resonated across the state.

However, the road to the chief minister’s chair was far from smooth. The Congress leadership took several days to finalise the chief ministerial candidate amid intense lobbying and internal discussions involving Satheesan, Venugopal, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala . The delay triggered widespread political speculation in Kerala, with many party workers openly backing Satheesan as the natural choice after leading the campaign from the front.

Eventually, the Congress high command chose Satheesan, a move viewed as recognition of both public sentiment and his role in delivering the UDF’s emphatic victory. His swearing-in ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram drew top Congress leaders and chief ministers from party-ruled states , reflecting the national significance attached to Kerala’s political turnaround.

Sources within the Congress said Satheesan’s meetings in Delhi focused on organisational matters, coordination between the state government and the party leadership, cabinet functioning, and the ongoing discussions over appointing a new Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president . The leadership reshuffle is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the Congress organisation as the party attempts to build on its Kerala momentum nationally.

The new chief minister has already moved quickly to project an image of governance and stability . Soon after taking oath, the Satheesan government signalled that the administration intends to combine welfare politics with development-oriented governance .
