After Delays, Bungie Confirms March 2026 Launch for Marathon With New Features

Bungie, the Sony-owned game studio behind Destiny 2 , has revealed a revamped vision for its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon , confirming a new release window in March 2026 and a price of $39.99. The announcement comes after the game was delayed from its original September 2025 launch, following underwhelming alpha feedback and a resolved plagiarism controversy.

The studio said the game now embraces a “dark sci-fi world and survival extraction challenge,” providing a more ominous and immersive experience. A 23-minute video released by Bungie showcased significant improvements to the game's visuals, environment, audio, and gameplay features, reflecting both community feedback and the studio’s creative vision.

Marathon’s world has been redesigned to feel more tense and threatening, closer to survival genre standards. Players can expect enhanced environmental storytelling, improved weather effects, and higher visual fidelity. New gameplay features include proximity chat, solo queue options, and a mode allowing players to drop into ongoing matches to scavenge loot. Available loot will consist of weapons, mods, and Runner shell archetypes that allow players to customize their playstyle.

The game will launch with four maps: three surface zones Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost—and the Cryo Archive, an end-game challenge. Post-launch support has been promised, including new maps, seasonal events, and additional Runner shells. Bungie also plans to provide free gameplay updates as part of a long-term roadmap.

The delay allowed Bungie to incorporate alpha feedback, creating a safer and more polished gaming experience. The plagiarism issue involving an artist’s work has been fully resolved with both the artist and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
