After 30 Years, Indian President Heads to Romania, Murmu’s Three-Nation Visit Set to Boost Ties

President Droupadi Murmu will undertake a significant three-nation state visit to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania from July 19 to July 25 , as India looks to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Central and Eastern Europe.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit will focus on expanding cooperation in key areas such as trade, technology, tourism, education, investment and people-to-people relations . The tour also aligns with India’s broader engagement with Europe and its strategic partnership with the European Union.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George described the visit as historically important, noting that it will mark the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian President to Moldova and North Macedonia . President Murmu’s visit to Romania will also be the first state visit by an Indian President to the country in over three decades , after the previous visit in 1994.

President Murmu will visit Moldova on July 20 at the invitation of President Maia Sandu . She will hold talks with Moldovan leaders, including one-to-one and delegation-level meetings, and meet Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu . She will also address a business forum and interact with members of the Indian community.

India and Moldova are expected to explore cooperation in sectors including digital technology, renewable energy, healthcare, agriculture, education and innovation. Education remains a key area of partnership, with many Indian students pursuing medical studies in Moldova.

The President will then travel to North Macedonia from July 21-22 , where she will hold talks with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova , Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and other senior officials. She will also address the Assembly of North Macedonia and participate in a business forum aimed at boosting economic cooperation.

The final leg of the tour will be in Romania from July 23-25 , where President Murmu will meet Romanian President Nicusor Dan and other top leaders. The visit is expected to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, especially amid growing India-EU engagement.
