African Union Summit Kicks Off Amid Rising Youth Frustration Over “Gerontocracy”

The African Union (AU) , representing Africa’s 1.4 billion population , is holding its annual summit in Ethiopia on February 14–15, 2026 , to discuss the continent’s future. However, the organisation is witnessing steadily declining support across Africa. Analysts say the AU, established to “promote unity and solidarity among African nations,” has failed to meet youth expectations , leading to a “ credibility crisis .” African countries are grappling with economic hardships triggered by military coups, contested elections, and stalled foreign aid , sparking widespread public discontent .

Africa is home to one of the youngest populations globally, with over 400 million people aged 15–35 . Yet paradoxically, it also hosts some of the world’s oldest and longest-serving leaders , a mismatch cited as a key factor behind frequent military coups . With the youth population projected to double by 2050 , Africa remains the only rapidly growing region where poverty is also deepening. Young Africans increasingly describe the AU as a “ club of elders ” on social media, arguing that the organisation prioritises government interests over those of the people.

Recent elections across multiple African countries exposed sidelining of opposition candidates, disputed results, and youth protests . Critics accuse the AU of endorsing incumbent governments without scrutinising flawed electoral processes. For instance, when Uganda suspended the internet and cracked down on opposition groups during elections, the AU Commission issued a statement “ commending ” the conduct of the polls. This drew strong youth backlash, with one young social media user commenting: “ The Dictatorship Club has spoken.

The 39th AU Summit , held over Saturday and Sunday in Addis Ababa , is focusing on water and sanitation as primary agenda items. Discussions will also address climate change and humanitarian crises arising from reduced foreign aid from countries such as the United States . Some observers see the summit as an opportunity to coordinate with international partners amid a shifting global order under U.S. President Donald Trump . However, critics argue that AU leaders should first address internal African issues and hold ineffective leaders accountable .

Internationally recognised leaders are playing key roles at the summit. UN Secretary-General António Guterres is attending as a special guest to coordinate on global peace and climate issues with Africa. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is advocating for women’s empowerment and economic reforms . Angolan President João Lourenço , serving as the current AU Chair , is working to resolve internal continental disputes , while Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye will assume the AU Chairmanship in 2026 , guiding Africa’s priorities over the coming year.
