Afghanistan’s ‘coach by chance’ Trott signs off after emotional T20 World Cup
Afghanistan’s English coach Jonathan Trott has stepped down from his role, leaving behind a legacy of growth, resilience, and heartfelt memories. The 44-year-old, who took charge “by chance” four years ago after Graham Thorpe was unable to accept the position, expressed deep emotions while reflecting on his tenure with a team that has emerged as a formidable force in white-ball cricket.
Afghanistan ended their T20 World Cup campaign on Thursday with a convincing 82-run victory over Canada , but the win came too late to secure a place in the Super Eights. Despite the exit, Trott spoke of pride in the team’s progress, highlighting milestones like nearly qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final and reaching the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 .
“Maybe the time's right, maybe it's not. I don’t know, but I wish everyone the best in the future. I’m very thankful for getting the opportunity,” Trott said. “I got the role by chance, and I gave it my all. I hope the players can see the love I have for the game and the care I have for them as players and as people.”
Born in South Africa, Trott said one of his greatest joys was witnessing the personal growth of his players. “The real satisfaction comes from seeing players develop off the field, change their families’ fortunes, and grow from young boys into young men,” he reflected.
Trott also admitted that emotions ran high during the tournament, particularly after narrow losses, including a heartbreaking Super Over defeat to South Africa . “We’ve been a little unlucky at times. Who knows how things would have unfolded if we had won that game in normal time,” he said.
As Trott closes this chapter, Afghanistan will regroup and look ahead to today’s T20 World Cup schedule , with matches that promise more thrilling moments and opportunities for emerging teams to shine.
