Afghanistan Qualify Directly for 2027 ODI World Cup After Defeating Ireland

Afghanistan secured direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after defeating Ireland by three wickets in a tense third ODI at Belfast. The victory ensured Afghanistan a top-eight position in the ODI rankings, meeting the qualification requirement for the tournament.

Afghanistan entered the match knowing that a victory would guarantee their World Cup berth. Their bowlers first produced an impressive effort, dismissing Ireland for just 206 in 46.3 overs.

The chase, however, became unexpectedly difficult. Afghanistan moved to 97 for two before losing wickets in quick succession and slipping to 176 for seven. With the pressure mounting, Rashid Khan stepped up at a crucial stage.

Rashid remained unbeaten on 37 off 43 balls, hitting four boundaries, while Yamin Ahmadzai provided valuable support with an unbeaten four off 26 balls. The pair guided Afghanistan to the target in 44.5 overs, completing a hard-fought three-wicket victory.

The result gave Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The opening ODI had been washed out, while Afghanistan had won the second match by 92 runs.

Afghanistan's qualification is particularly significant as the top eight teams in the ODI rankings, excluding the co-hosts, earn direct entry. The 2027 World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

This will be Afghanistan's fourth appearance in an ODI World Cup, following their campaigns in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Their latest qualification continues the country's rapid rise in international cricket.

Meanwhile, West Indies, currently ranked 10th, will have to take the qualification route after missing out on a direct spot.
