Advertising legend Piyush Pandey passes away at 70
Piyush Pandey, widely regarded as one of India’s greatest advertising legends, passed away early Friday at the age of 70. Known for his unmatched creativity, cultural insight, and storytelling ability, Pandey left an indelible mark on Indian advertising and popular culture.
Born in Jaipur, Pandey started his career in advertising in the 1970s and quickly became known for his ability to connect brands with everyday Indians through simple, relatable messaging. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he created some of India’s most iconic campaigns for brands such as Asian Paints, Fevicol, Cadbury, and Vodafone. His work is celebrated for its warmth, humor, and emotional resonance, making products and ideas memorable to audiences across the country.
In addition to his commercial work, Pandey played a pivotal role in shaping the communication strategy for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 election campaign, helping convey messages that connected with millions of voters nationwide. In the late 1980s, he also penned the lyrics for Mile Sur Mera Tumhara , a government-backed song celebrating India’s diversity, which became a cultural milestone.
Pandey spent most of his career at Ogilvy India , one of the country’s leading advertising agencies, serving as Chief Creative Officer and later Executive Chairman. Even after stepping back from day-to-day operations, he continued to advise Ogilvy, mentor young creatives, and guide major campaigns, leaving an enduring influence on the industry.
Union Ministers paid tribute to Pandey’s legacy. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called him a “titan and legend” who transformed communication with “everyday idioms, earthy humour, and genuine warmth.” Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described him as a “phenomenon” whose storytelling redefined advertising. “To me, he was a friend whose brilliance shone through his authenticity, warmth, and wit,” Goyal said.
Tributes poured in from India Inc and the advertising world, celebrating both his creative genius and his personal warmth. Piyush Pandey’s contributions continue to inspire generations, making him a true icon of Indian advertising.
