Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters FC played out a thrilling goalless draw in their Indian Super League (ISL) encounter at the Marina Arena on Saturday, with a missed penalty, two strikes against the woodwork and a late red-card drama highlighting the contest.

In Chennaiyin’s first home match of the season, Adrian Luna had a golden opportunity to put Kerala Blasters ahead but struck the woodwork from the penalty spot in the 49th minute. At the other end, Irfan Yadwad also came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when his effort hit the crossbar in the 69th minute.

Both teams began aggressively, pressing high and looking to create chances through quick attacks. Chennaiyin came closest to scoring in the first half through Madih Talal and Yadwad, but Kerala goalkeeper Amrinder Singh produced important saves to keep the visitors in the contest.

Kerala made a half-time substitution, introducing Sumit Singh for Hormipam Ruivah. The visitors soon earned a penalty after Mohammad Sanan was brought down inside the box by Yadwad. The referee pointed to the spot following the incident, which also involved contact between Yadwad’s arm and the ball.

Luna sent the goalkeeper the wrong way but his penalty struck the woodwork and bounced away. Kerala continued to threaten, with Andre Green forcing Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz into action.

Chennaiyin pushed for a winner as the match progressed. Yadwad’s effort against the crossbar and a late one-on-one opportunity denied by Amrinder ensured the hosts could not find a breakthrough.

The contest ended on a heated note as Andre Green and Imanishimwe were shown red cards following a stoppage-time scuffle. Neither side managed to find the winning goal, forcing both teams to settle for a point.
