
Aditya Birla Group to Invest Additional ₹12,000 Crore in Odisha Alumina Refinery Expansion
Aditya Birla Group has announced an additional investment of ₹12,000 crore to expand its greenfield alumina refinery at Kansariguda in Odisha's Rayagada district , taking the project's total investment to ₹20,000 crore . The announcement was made on Saturday after Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Bhubaneswar.
The refinery, being developed by Hindalco Industries Ltd , was initially planned with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at an investment of ₹8,000 crore . The proposed expansion will increase its capacity to 3 MTPA , making it one of Hindalco's major alumina refining projects in eastern India.
The Kansariguda refinery is Hindalco's first greenfield alumina refinery in Odisha , complementing the company's existing refinery and two aluminium smelters in the state. The expansion is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment , support local businesses and strengthen Odisha's aluminium value chain.
Welcoming the proposal, Mohan Charan Majhi said Odisha aims to leverage its mineral wealth for value addition, advanced manufacturing and quality employment . He reiterated the state's ambition to build a globally competitive aluminium ecosystem spanning refining, primary metal production and downstream manufacturing.
The Chief Minister assured the Aditya Birla Group of full government support, including assistance with land, infrastructure, utilities and statutory approvals , to ensure timely project execution.
The meeting also reviewed the group's investments across aluminium, alumina, chemicals, cement, renewable energy, textiles and apparel , while exploring future opportunities in copper refining, printed circuit boards, paints, jewellery manufacturing and advanced aluminium products .
The announcement comes days after Odisha signed a ₹1.08 lakh crore MoU with Adani Enterprises Ltd and International Resources Holding (IRH) to develop an integrated greenfield aluminium project, highlighting the state's growing focus on attracting large-scale investments in the metals sector.
