Adilabad Fort is a significant historical structure located close to the famous Golconda Fort in Hyderabad. It was built during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1325-1351). In earlier times, it was known as *Mahmudabad Fort, but over the years it came to be called Adilabad Fort. Because of its proximity to Golconda, this fort primarily served as a protective outpost. During times of invasion, it acted like a defensive barrier, facing enemy attacks before they reached the main Golconda Fort.

Architectural Style

The fort spans nearly 80 acres in area. The surrounding walls are tall and strong, with bastions built for defense. Its construction mainly used **stone, wood, and lime mortar.

The entrance gateway is finely crafted and strategically designed to minimize enemy access.

History

Constructed in 1325 by Muhammad bin Tughlaq Later came under the control of the Bahmani Sultans, and then the Qutb Shahi rulers of Golconda. The fort served mainly as a military outpost. It played a vital role in protecting Golconda Fort, as invaders had to first capture Adilabad before reaching the main fort.

Present Condition

Today, much of the fort lies in ruins, but its architectural grandeur is still visible. The walls and bastions continue to stand, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval defense systems.
