Adidas India Layoffs 20% Tech Jobs Cut As Engineers And Data Scientists Are Hit
Adidas India layoffs have affected the German sportswear giant’s technology team at its Gurugram hub, with software engineers, data scientists and data engineers among those impacted. The layoffs were announced during a town hall meeting on Tuesday, September 15, leaving employees facing an uncertain future.
Adidas confirmed the job cuts on Wednesday, September 16, calling them a “difficult decision”, but did not disclose the number of employees affected or the scale of the layoffs.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to align our operating model with the evolving needs of the business, we have made the difficult decision to reduce a number of roles within our Technology organisation in India,” Adidas said in a statement shared with Wocult.
Citing people familiar with the process, employees were divided into two groups when the layoffs were announced. Some affected workers received exit letters on September 15 itself, effectively being asked to leave the same day.
Others were told to remain with Adidas until December 15 to complete handover responsibilities to colleagues at other technology hubs. These employees were also asked to explore other roles within the company. If they cannot find another position by December 15, that will be their last working day.
Details about severance packages, notice pay and redeployment support could not be confirmed.
The layoffs affected more than 350 employees at Adidas’ Gurugram India Tech Hub, which has around 700 workers. If accurate, that would mean roughly 45 to 50 per cent of the hub’s workforce was affected. However, these figures have not been independently verified, and Adidas has not confirmed that 350 or more employees were laid off.
Adidas said the restructuring is intended to “simplify parts of our organisation, strengthen critical capabilities” and position the company for long term success in a rapidly changing business and technology environment.
The company also said India remains a strategically important market and that its Technology Hub continues to support growth, innovation and digital transformation. Adidas said it would support affected employees with care, respect and appropriate transition assistance.
The Gurugram facility houses Adidas’ local marketing organisation and one of its Global Engineering Tech Hubs. The company launched a Global Business Services centre in Chennai in 2024. According to Adidas’ website, around 650 employees work across its Gurugram and Chennai hubs.
