The sacred Himalayan destinations of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat in Uttarakhand have witnessed an unprecedented surge in visitors, with a record 27,911 pilgrims arriving in May this year, marking an increase of more than 150 per cent over recent years.

Officials said the rise reflects the growing popularity of the pilgrimage circuit, which has emerged as a major driver of economic activity in the remote border district of Pithoragarh. According to Dharchula Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashish Joshi , Adi Kailash alone received 10,267 visitors in May 2025, compared with 9,554 in 2024 and 2,858 in 2023 .

The increase in pilgrim traffic gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the region in October 2023, bringing national attention to the revered sites nestled near the India-China border.

Pithoragarh District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgai said the Adi Kailash Yatra has become one of the biggest sources of local employment , benefiting transport operators, homestays, guides, shopkeepers and small businesses across the region. The growing tourism economy has also helped reduce migration from border villages by creating new livelihood opportunities.

The pilgrimage season began on May 1 with the opening of the Lord Shiva temple at Jolingkong and is expected to continue until October, weather permitting.

The tourism boom has also accelerated infrastructure development , including roads, accommodation facilities and public services in previously isolated areas. However, experts caution that the sharp rise in visitors also raises concerns about the fragile Himalayan ecology , with issues such as waste management, water stress and biodiversity conservation becoming increasingly important.

As pilgrim numbers continue to rise, Adi Kailash is increasingly being seen as a model for how religious tourism can support regional development while underscoring the need for sustainable tourism practices .
