Adani Group to build world’s largest battery storage project in Gujarat
The Adani Group on Tuesday announced its entry into the battery energy storage sector with plans to set up a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat, making it India’s largest and among the world’s biggest single-location storage projects, by surpassing the existing global leaders the Edwards & Sanborn Solar + Energy Storage Project (3,287 MWh) and the Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility (3,000 MWh), both in California, USA.
According to the company, the project comprising over 700 BESS containers is expected to be commissioned by March 2026. It will be integrated into the Khavda Renewable Energy Complex, already recognised as the world’s largest renewable energy plant.
Battery energy storage systems are critical for improving grid stability and enabling round-the-clock renewable energy supply by storing excess solar and wind energy for use during periods of low generation. This technology reduces dependency on fossil fuels, enhances power reliability, and lowers electricity costs.
Adani said the upcoming BESS will enhance grid reliability, reduce peak load pressures, and support continuous clean power delivery. The system will use advanced lithium-ion battery technology and intelligent energy management systems to optimise performance and ensure operational efficiency.
“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group. “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability.”
The facility will be capable of storing 3,530 MWh of energy, effectively extending its 1,126 MW power capacity for about three hours. Adani Group plans to scale its total storage capacity to 15 GWh by FY27 and reach 50 GWh within five years, underscoring its ambition to lead large-scale clean energy infrastructure development in India.
The group clarified that while the BESS project is in advanced stages of deployment, no Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or direct service contract has yet been announced for this specific capacity. The absence of a disclosed PPA indicates that commercial arrangements for the battery storage segment are still under discussion.
With this new initiative, the Adani Group joins the ranks of global energy leaders investing in large-scale storage infrastructure marking a transformative step in India’s clean energy transition.
Headquartered in Ahmedabad, the Adani Group operates diversified businesses across energy, logistics, metals, and consumer sectors, and continues to align its growth strategy with India’s net-zero and sustainability goals.
