Actor-politician Vijay's wife files divorce petition
Sankgeetha Vijay , wife of actor-politician and TVK founder Joseph Vijay Chandrasekar , has filed a divorce petition at a family court in Chengalpattu, citing irretrievable breakdown of marriage.
In her plea under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 , Sankgeetha alleged that Vijay engaged in an extra-marital relationship with an actress and subjected her to "persistent mental cruelty, neglect, and desertion." She has reserved the right to include the actress as a second respondent if the court deems it necessary.
The petition highlights that since 2021, Vijay had "emotionally withdrawn," displayed verbal disdain, and forced Sankgeetha to live separately within their home. His alleged continued association with the actress caused emotional distress to her and embarrassment to their children in social and school circles.
Seeking privacy, Sankgeetha requested the court to conduct proceedings in camera and urged an interim injunction to restrain social media platforms, YouTube channels, and print media from publishing any material related to the case, citing concerns over further humiliation and mental agony for her and her family.
Despite multiple efforts to resolve the matter amicably, including legal notices and personal discussions in 2024-25, Sankgeetha stated that all attempts failed, leaving her with no choice but to approach the court.
The couple first married in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998 , followed by a ceremonial wedding in Chennai on August 25, 1999 . The petition is expected to come up for hearing on April 10 .
