Actor-politician Vijay has strongly condemned the alleged attack on television journalists in Karur, Tamil Nadu, calling it an “attack on the fourth pillar of democracy” and criticising the government for inaction.

The incident reportedly occurred when a reporter and cameraman from a Tamil news channel visited a quarry near Sivayam North village to film operations without prior permission . Confronted by quarry staff, a physical altercation broke out , leaving the journalists injured. The quarry owner filed a complaint alleging illegal filming and extortion , while the journalists lodged a counter-complaint for assault.

Multiple men linked to Srirangam DMK MLA M. Palaniyandi are said to have been involved in the assault. A video showing the MLA allegedly attacking the journalists went viral, drawing public outrage. Vijay condemned the attack, calling it shameful that no FIR has been registered or action taken against the perpetrators.

“The brutal attack on journalists, who act as the fourth pillar of democracy, is unacceptable. It is alarming that the Chief Minister remains silent while no case has been filed against the MLA,” Vijay said.

The actor-politician also highlighted that such behavior by an elected representative reflects a deteriorating law and order situation in the state . He demanded that a case be registered immediately and strict legal action be taken against those responsible, adding that the people may reject the ruling party in the upcoming Assembly elections.

BJP state leaders criticised the DMK government for failing to act, alleging impunity and warning that press freedom was under threat. PMK leaders demanded immediate arrests, emphasizing that political affiliation should not shield anyone from accountability. Former BJP officials also accused the police of attempting a cover-up, highlighting inconsistencies between the authorities’ statements and the journalists’ accounts.

Karur district authorities stated that both parties suffered injuries and that investigations are ongoing . They denied any kidnapping, noting that complaints from both the journalists and quarry owner have been recorded and inquiries are being conducted.

The incident has escalated into a political flashpoint, with opposition parties using it to highlight what they describe as failures in law enforcement and protection of media personnel under the current DMK government.
