Actor Soni Razdan has strongly criticised online trolling directed at her daughter Alia Bhatt following the latter’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, saying that social media reflects both positivity and a significant amount of hate , and that this phenomenon reveals deeper issues within society.

Alia Bhatt attended the prestigious festival as the global ambassador for L'Oréal Paris for the second consecutive year and walked the red carpet as part of her official association with the international beauty brand. Her appearance at Cannes drew wide attention on social media, especially after a video from the red carpet went viral.

The video in question claimed that photographers appeared not to recognise the actor and briefly lowered their cameras while she was posing. The clip sparked a heated debate online, with users divided in their reactions. While some defended Bhatt and praised her global presence, others criticised her, claiming she is not widely recognised on the international stage.

Reacting to the controversy, Soni Razdan responded to a post defending her daughter and said that social media is filled with “love, information, entertainment”, but also a large volume of hate. She added that this trend reflects something significant about society and could be analysed as a sociological discussion that may be studied for years.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt also addressed an online comment that read, “What a pity, no one noticed you.” Responding sharply yet calmly, she said, “Why pity love? You noticed me,” a reply that was widely shared across platforms.

The ongoing edition of the Cannes Film Festival began on May 12 and will conclude on May 23. Alongside Bhatt, veteran actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a long-time Cannes regular, and Aditi Rao Hydari are also representing India at the festival this year.

The incident has once again sparked discussions on celebrity culture, online trolling, and the impact of viral content on public perception.
