Academics oppose UGC Math reforms

The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) recently released draft curriculum framework for undergraduate mathematics has sparked strong criticism from academics and subject experts across the country. While the UGC claims the new structure aims to modernize learning and align courses with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, many scholars argue that the draft dilutes core mathematical rigor and reduces emphasis on essential topics.

According to critics, the proposed syllabus shifts focus towards applied and interdisciplinary elements at the cost of foundational subjects like algebra, topology, and real analysis. Faculty members from leading universities expressed concern that this could leave students ill-prepared for postgraduate studies or careers in research-intensive fields. Some also highlighted the lack of proper consultation with stakeholders before finalizing the draft, noting that several renowned mathematicians and teachers were not invited to provide inputs.

Supporters of the draft argue that the curriculum attempts to broaden career opportunities for students by integrating data science, artificial intelligence, and practical applications.
