India’s batting stars shone bright in September as Abhishek Sharma and Smriti Mandhana were named ICC Players of the Month, following stellar performances in the Asia Cup and the women’s ODI series against Australia. Their consistent run-scoring and match-winning displays earned them the coveted accolades, highlighting India’s growing dominance in both men’s and women’s cricket.
Abhishek Sharma, the dynamic opener, amassed 314 runs in seven T20Is during the period at an impressive average of 44.85, boasting a striking strike rate of 200. His fiery form played a key role in India’s Asia Cup campaign, where he was also named Player of the Tournament. In addition, Abhishek reached the highest-ever rating points in the ICC T20I batting rankings, underlining his rapid rise in international cricket.
The 25-year-old emerged ahead of competitors such as Kuldeep Yadav and Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett. Speaking on the recognition, Abhishek said, “It feels great to win this ICC award, especially for matches that were crucial. I am proud to be part of a team that can pull off victories in the toughest situations. Our T20I record reflects the team’s strong culture and positive mindset.”
On the women’s side, India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was unstoppable during the home ODI series against Australia. She scored 308 runs in four matches at an average of 77, including scores of 58, 117, and 125. Notably, Mandhana registered the fastest century by an Indian woman against Australia, reaching three figures in just 50 deliveries in the third match. Her strike rate during this period stood at a formidable 135.68.
Mandhana triumphed over South Africa’s Tazmin Brits and Pakistan’s Sidra Amin to claim the award. She expressed her motivation for the future, saying, “A recognition like this pushes me to keep growing and evolving as a player. My aim has always been to deliver my best and win matches for the team.”
With Abhishek and Mandhana leading the charge, Indian cricket continues to enjoy a period of exceptional performances, inspiring fans and setting the stage for further success in upcoming international fixtures.
