Abhijeet Gupta Retains Lead After Draw In Pune International Grandmaster Chess Tournament

Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta continued to hold the top position at the Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Chess Tournament after being held to a draw by IM Akshay Borgaonkar in the seventh round on Monday.

Gupta, who has displayed consistent form in the tournament, secured a half-point from the encounter to remain the sole leader with 5.5 points . The result helped him maintain his advantage in the closely contested competition, which featured a strong line-up of Grandmasters, International Masters and other titled players from India and abroad.

The Pune International Grandmaster Tournament is being played in a round-robin format, with participants competing against each other for valuable points. The event has witnessed several intense encounters, with players battling for positions at the top of the leaderboard as the tournament progresses.

While Gupta retained his lead, IM Ashwath S continued his impressive campaign by defeating Belarusian GM Alexey Alexandrov to move into second place with 5 points . The Indian International Master has been among the leading performers in the event and remains firmly in contention for the top spot.

IM Kushagra Mohan also strengthened his position after registering a victory over Belarusian GM Fedorov Alexei . The win lifted Kushagra to third place with 5 points , keeping the race for the title highly competitive.

In another important result, FM Advik Agarwal defeated compatriot IM Nitish Belurkar to climb to fourth position with 4 points. Sri Lankan IM LMST de Silva also recorded a convincing victory over USA's FM Vaidyanathan Kannan .

The seventh-round results saw IM Kushagra Mohan defeat GM Fedorov Alexei, while FM Advik Agarwal registered a victory over IM Nitish Belurkar. IM Ashwath S defeated GM Aleksej Alexandrov, and IM Akshay Borgaonkar played out a draw with tournament leader GM Abhijeet Gupta. In another match, FM Vaidyanathan Kannan lost to IM LMST de Silva.

With Gupta leading the standings and several players within striking distance, the remaining rounds are expected to produce a tight battle for the championship in Pune.
