AAP Leader Lucky Oberoi Shot Dead in Jalandhar

Aam Aadmi Party leader Lucky Oberoi (Satvinder Pal Singh) was shot dead on Friday morning outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar’s Model Town by unidentified assailants, police said. The attack took place when Oberoi arrived at the gurdwara in his Mahindra Thar. The assailants, riding a two-wheeler, opened fire before fleeing the spot.

Oberoi, a prominent financier and property businessman, was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a murder case and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and teams have been formed to trace the attackers. The motive behind the killing remains unclear.

Oberoi was considered an influential local leader and was closely associated with the party’s organisational activities in Jalandhar. His family is also politically active, with his wife Simarjot Kaur having contested the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation elections in December 2024.

The killing comes amid a continuing spate of gun violence in Punjab , which has shown little sign of easing. The most high-profile case in recent years was the murder of singer and political figure Sidhu Moosewala in 2022 , followed by the shooting of Sudhir Suri in Amritsar the same year. Subsequent gang-related and targeted killings in districts such as Batala, Ferozepur, and Moga have kept concerns over illegal firearms and public safety in focus.

Friday’s attack on Oberoi is the latest addition to this troubling pattern , with police yet to make any arrests.
