A tragedy, but a record too: ONGC extinguishes Konaseema blowout in just five days

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Saturday successfully extinguished a fire triggered by a gas blowout at its Mori-5 onshore gas well in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district , completing the high-risk operation in just five days a timeline that stands out as unprecedented in India’s onshore hydrocarbon operations .

The fire broke out on January 5 near Mori and Irusumanda villages in Mamidikuduru mandal , after a gas leak erupted into a towering fireball nearly 20 metres high and 25 metres wide , prompting evacuations and widespread concern in the fertile Konaseema delta.

ONGC said its Crisis Management Team (CMT) extinguished the blaze and capped the well under extremely challenging conditions, describing the operation as a globally rare achievement in blowout-control response. Konaseema District Joint Collector T. Nisanthi confirmed that the blowout had been fully controlled on Saturday morning, with no loss of life or injuries reported.

The significance of the five-day turnaround becomes clearer when placed against past blowout-control timelines. In recent onshore incidents in Assam , ONGC has taken around two weeks to cap gas-well blowouts even when fires were avoided. The Baghjan blowout of 2020 , which escalated into a sustained fire, took several months before the well was finally brought under control. Globally as well, blowouts involving active fires have typically taken weeks or months to fully contain, depending on terrain, pressure, and access to the wellhead.

Against this backdrop, experts say capping an onshore gas well fire in five days particularly in a densely populated, irrigated agricultural belt is exceptionally rare. Industry specialists point out that the ability to quickly secure safe physical access to the wellhead , despite intense heat and pressure, is often the single most decisive factor in determining how long such fires burn.

The Mori-5 well was being operated by Deep Industries Ltd under ONGC’s Production Enhancement Contractor (PEC) model, before ONGC’s senior management assumed direct operational control following the blowout.

Officials said the Konaseema incident stands apart not only for its speed of resolution but also because it involved an active fire at an onshore well , a scenario seldom seen in India. District authorities said monitoring of the surrounding farmland would continue as a precaution, while ONGC is expected to carry out a detailed technical review of the incident.

ONGC said the successful operation reflected its technical preparedness, crisis-response capability, and commitment to safety , even as it acknowledged the seriousness of the incident in one of Andhra Pradesh’s most environmentally sensitive regions.
