A Reel Turns Fatal: Water Tank Collapse Claims Young Life, 2 Rescued by IAF Chopper in UP
A routine afternoon turned tragic in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh , when a group of children climbed an abandoned water tank, unaware of the danger looming beneath their feet. What was meant to be a moment of fun, possibly even a social media reel, ended in a devastating accident that claimed a young life and left two others critically injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday near the Kashiram Housing locality , where a defunct water tank , reportedly built around three decades ago, had long been declared unsafe. Despite restrictions, the structure remained easily accessible, often attracting children.
As five boys climbed down after reaching the top, the dilapidated staircase suddenly collapsed , sending three of them crashing to the ground. Siddharth (10) was rushed to a medical college but was declared dead on arrival , while Golu (12) and Sunny (14) sustained severe injuries and were shifted to Gorakhpur for advanced treatment.
Two other boys. Pavan (14) and Shaban (12) , were left stranded atop the unstable structure, triggering an urgent rescue operation. Initial efforts to reach them failed due to heavy rain and waterlogging , which made the ground too swampy for cranes or heavy equipment.
With conditions worsening, authorities sought aerial assistance. Early Sunday morning, an Indian Air Force helicopter was deployed from Gorakhpur. In a swift 15-minute operation , both stranded children were airlifted safely around 5:20 am and taken for medical care.
Officials said the rescue was carried out under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath , who monitored the situation closely.
Beyond the rescue, the tragedy raises serious concerns about public safety and neglected infrastructure . An unsafe structure, left accessible, has now cost a child his life, a stark reminder of the consequences of delayed action.
