A Death Foretold: Open pit in Noida turns fatal for 5 year old

In yet another tragic drowning incident in Greater Noida , a five-year-old boy lost his life after falling into a water-filled pit near his home, exposing glaring lapses in local safety measures and civic oversight.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Preet Vihar, located in the Chhapraula area. The child, identified as Devraj , had returned home earlier in the day after feeling unwell at school, where he had appeared for a mathematics oral test. Later in the afternoon, he stepped out to play with friends but failed to return.

According to police, a frantic search by family members ended in horror when Devraj was found submerged in a nearby pit filled with rainwater. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Devraj’s father, Umesh Gupta , an e-rickshaw driver originally from Rampur, has been living in the locality for the past four years. The child is survived by his parents and a younger sibling. While authorities have termed the death an accident, the circumstances point to a disturbing pattern of negligence . Open, unfenced, and waterlogged pits often left behind by construction or poor drainage works have become silent death traps across rapidly expanding urban pockets like Greater Noida.

Residents allege that repeated complaints about such hazards have gone unaddressed. The absence of barricades, warning signs, or basic safety protocols reflects a systemic failure of local authorities to secure residential areas, especially those inhabited by vulnerable communities.

This incident is far from isolated. In February 2026 alone, at least three children lost their lives to drowning in Gautam Buddha Nagar , underlining a recurring and deeply troubling pattern. In recent months, similar cases involving minors falling into unattended, water-filled pits and ditches have repeatedly emerged, intensifying concerns over public safety. These back-to-back tragedies raise a pressing question: who must be held accountable for such preventable deaths? Civic bodies, private contractors, and local authorities continue to function within a blurred framework of responsibility, often escaping scrutiny even as lives continue to be lost.

As urban expansion accelerates, the lack of enforcement of safety norms is proving fatal. Devraj’s death is a grim reminder that beyond condolences and routine inquiries, what is needed is strict accountability, regular inspections, and immediate action to eliminate such hazards. Until then, these pits remain more than just infrastructural oversights; they are unmarked graves waiting for the next victim .
