9 days later, Jammu-Srinagar route back in action
After nine tense days of disruption, the crucial Jammu-Srinagar national highway has finally reopened for traffic, reconnecting Kashmir with the rest of India. The 270-kilometre all-weather road, which serves as the lifeline for transport, supplies, and pilgrimage, had been blocked due to heavy rains, flash floods, and multiple landslides. While briefly reopened on August 30, worsening conditions forced another closure, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded and halting essential supplies to Kashmir Valley, Doda, and Kishtwar districts.
Officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) described the reopening as a result of relentless efforts, with workers laboring round the clock through rains and mud to restore the road. A massive landslide near Thard-Jakheni in Udhampur district, covering an area of 550 by 300 metres, had buried the highway under debris. In just three days of intense work since September 7, a 300-metre diversion was constructed, allowing vehicles to move smoothly once again.
Besides the main highway, other key routes like Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag and Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri roads were also cleared, though the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar stretch remains blocked. Pilgrimages to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine were still suspended, highlighting the wider impact on religious tourism. The floods and landslides have damaged nearly 12,000 kilometres of roads across Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the scale of infrastructural vulnerability in the region.
Experts note that the reopening underscores both the strategic importance of the highway and the challenges posed by climate-related disruptions. The region’s mountainous terrain, coupled with extreme weather, makes maintenance and disaster response a continuous struggle. Rapid restoration of transport links is critical, not only for daily commuters and essential supplies but also for sustaining the economic and social stability of the valley.
Looking ahead, authorities may need to adopt more resilient road engineering and early warning systems to mitigate future disruptions. While the reopening is a relief for residents and travelers, it also serves as a reminder of how natural hazards can quickly isolate a region, making robust infrastructure and proactive planning indispensable for connectivity and safety.
