An 86-year-old man and his dog have been rescued from the Pacific Ocean after spending more than two months without contact with the outside world aboard a disabled sailboat. The dramatic rescue took place hundreds of miles off the California coast following a multi-day search by the US Coast Guard and assistance from a passing cargo ship.

The sailor was travelling aboard his vessel, Willow Wind, from Astoria, Oregon, to Pago Pago in American Samoa. However, authorities had not heard from him since August 20. The Coast Guard received a report about the overdue sailor on October 24 and launched a search operation.

A breakthrough came on October 27, when an emergency position-indicating radio beacon registered to the sailboat transmitted a distress signal. The Coast Guard deployed a C-27 Spartan aircraft from Sacramento, diverted an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and sent the Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward to assist.

A Coast Guard aircraft eventually located Willow Wind approximately 460 miles off San Diego. The commercial vessel Grand Orion reached the stranded sailor and his dog at around 3:20 am on October 28. However, rough sea conditions initially prevented the crew from safely bringing them aboard.

After waiting for conditions to improve, the Grand Orion crew successfully rescued the pair at approximately 5:36 pm. The sailboat had sustained damage to its sails and was left drifting in the ocean.

The rescue operation continued the following morning, October 29, when a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter picked up the man and his dog from the Grand Orion, which was then approximately 170 miles west of Ventura, California. They were transported to San Diego for further assistance.

The sailor was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for medical evaluation. According to reports quoting the Coast Guard, he was weak and had difficulty walking but had suffered no major injuries. His dog's condition was not separately detailed.

Coast Guard Commander Jason Nguyen thanked the merchant mariners and rescue crews for their coordinated efforts. He also highlighted the importance of carrying emergency communication equipment and preparing a float plan so someone on land knows a sailor's intended route and arrival details.
