80 Screens, 900 Viewers: Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Struggles To Impress Japan Audience
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar has faced an unexpected hurdle in Japan, with the much hyped action spy drama recording a disappointing opening day response despite receiving a wide theatrical release. Directed by Aditya Dhar , the film arrived in Japanese cinemas on July 10 across nearly 80 screens , but early trade estimates suggest that fewer than 900 viewers watched the film on its first day .
The underwhelming start has surprised the trade, especially because Dhurandhar entered Japan after becoming a major box office success in India and overseas markets . The film carried strong expectations among exhibitors and fans, with its star power, large scale action sequences and Aditya Dhar’s reputation creating significant buzz before its Japanese release.
According to early tracking reports, the film recorded around 449 footfalls by 2 PM across 57 locations , but audience turnout slowed later in the day. Despite expanding to around 80 locations, the Ranveer Singh starrer reportedly failed to secure a place among Japan’s Top 25 films on its opening day .
The opening numbers also kept Dhurandhar away from the list of highest opening day footfalls for Indian films in Japan . The benchmark remains extremely high, with RRR leading the chart with around 8,230 footfalls , followed by Saaho with 6,510 and Kalki 2898 AD with around 3,700 footfalls .
Interestingly, Dhurandhar’s Japan struggle mirrors the performance of Pushpa 2: The Rule , which also generated huge excitement before release but recorded fewer than 900 opening day footfalls in Japan. Trade analysts believe that limited promotional activity in Japan and the release strategy may have affected audience turnout.
However, the film’s theatrical journey in Japan is not over yet. The upcoming weekend performance and audience word of mouth will decide whether Dhurandhar can recover from its slow beginning or continue its disappointing overseas run .
