The Election Commission of India’s flying squad seized a large consignment of gold and silver jewellery worth ₹77.29 crore during a vehicle inspection in Ashok Nagar , part of the T Nagar Assembly constituency , police confirmed on Friday.

The haul, weighing approximately 381 kilograms , was discovered on the night of March 26 . According to authorities, the driver revealed that the jewellery was originally being transported in another vehicle, which could not continue due to a tyre burst. The ornaments were then transferred to the vehicle that was stopped by the squad, reportedly for delivery to local jewellers.

Officials said the consignment was seized because the driver did not have the necessary paperwork , including invoices, tax receipts, or transport permits. Without proper documentation, authorities could not verify the legitimacy of the transport.

As of now, there is no confirmation regarding who owns the jewellery . Authorities have not provided any information linking it to a registered jeweller, business entity, or private individual. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended recipients of the consignment.

Despite speculation on social media, there is no verified evidence that the jewellery is connected to any promises of gold being offered to voters during or after the elections. The ECI has strict rules prohibiting gifts or cash to influence voters, and enforcement squads are actively monitoring compliance.

The seizure highlights the importance of proper documentation for transporting high-value items , especially during election periods. Authorities continue to investigate the matter and will take further action once ownership and compliance are verified.
