A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Davao Oriental province , Mindanao, on Wednesday morning, sending tremors across the region. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the quake occurred at 11:02 am local time , at a depth of 42 km , with the epicentre located about 47 km from the coastal town of Manay .

Tremors were felt widely across Mindanao, prompting concern among residents in nearby coastal and inland areas. Police and disaster officials reported no immediate injuries or structural damage , although authorities are monitoring the situation closely for possible aftershocks . Phivolcs warned that aftershocks may occur in the coming hours or days and could affect weaker buildings, trigger landslides, or disrupt utilities in nearby areas.

This quake adds to a series of recent seismic events in the Philippines, including a magnitude 5.7 quake in December 2025 and a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in October 2025 near Cebu, which caused casualties and power disruptions.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire , one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where multiple tectonic plates, including the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, interact. In the east, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Philippine Microplate along the Philippine Trench, while in the west, the Eurasian Plate subducts under the islands along the Manila and Negros Trenches. This rare double subduction generates immense underground stress, making the country prone to frequent earthquakes. The archipelago regularly experiences seismic activity; recent monitoring data shows thousands of tremors annually, with the Philippines recording several thousand earthquakes in the past year alone , including numerous minor shocks that often go unnoticed and occasional larger events that are widely felt.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay alert, follow local safety advisories , and remain prepared for possible aftershocks.
