₹618 crore liftoff: Karnataka’s new Vijayapura airport

The Karnataka cabinet has given a fresh push to the Vijayapura greenfield airport, app roving a revised estimate of ₹618.75 crore. The project is no longer designed just for small ATR planes but is being expanded to handle larger aircraft, with the aim of boosting connectivity and opening up new economic opportunities for the region.

The cost rise is striking. The original budget stood at about ₹347.92 crore, but nearly ₹270 crore has been added. The extra funds are meant to strengthen the runway, expand the apron, and improve terminal facilities so that the airport can accommodate big jets. This marks a shift from a modest regional airstrip to an airport with the potential to serve as a serious transport hub in northern Karnataka.

For Vijayapura and surrounding districts, this upgrade could be a gamechanger. Improved air connectivity means faster travel, better access for tourists to historic sites, and smoother cargo movement,especially for agriculture and small industries. A modern airport could attract investment, stimulate local businesses, and create new jobs in aviation-linked services, logistics, and hospitality.

But there are risks. A bigger budget and bigger promises don’t automatically guarantee success. The airport still needs regulatory clearances, safety systems, and environmental approvals before it can become fully operational. Without these in place, even a newly built runway can sit idle.

The jump from ₹348 crore to nearly ₹619 crore also raises important questions. Is the additional money being used to create long-term assets, or is it mainly covering cost escalations? Transparent spending and regular updates will be crucial to maintain public trust.

The real success of the project will be measured by outcomes: regular flights by larger aircraft, steady cargo traffic, and visible economic benefits like more tourist inflows and business activity.
