58 Cases Registered Along Key NH-202 Stretch Amid Manipur Conflict

Police have registered 58 FIRs involving cognisable offences along National Highway 202 (NH-202) in Manipur’s Ukhrul district since clashes broke out between Kuki and Naga communities in February, according to a status report submitted before the Manipur High Court.

The district police filed the report on August 25 in connection with a public interest litigation seeking directions to ensure safe and uninterrupted movement of civilians and vehicles carrying essential supplies along the strategic highway.

The report described NH-202 as a vital economic and supply lifeline for Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, connecting the region with Imphal. Police said the district administration and security agencies have been implementing firm and impartial measures to prevent road blockades, maintain public safety and facilitate the movement of vehicles.

“All cognisable offences” reported along the Mahadev-T M Kasom stretch identified in the petition were registered at Litan Police Station, the report said. Since the conflict began on February 8, 2026, 58 FIRs have been registered.

Of these, two cases have been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). One involves victims from the Kuki community, while the other concerns victims from the Tangkhul community. Police said due process was underway to refer additional cases to the central agency.

To strengthen security along NH-202, authorities have deployed two companies of the CRPF, nine companies of the BSF, eight columns of the Army and Assam Rifles, along with personnel from the Manipur Rifles.

Security forces are carrying out road-opening operations, area domination and escort duties to enable the safe movement of civilians and transportation of essential commodities.

Police said they remain committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting fundamental rights and ensuring impartial investigations.

At least 20 people have been killed in firing incidents in Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts since February.
