The US Open is set to become the richest Grand Slam tournament in tennis history, with the singles champions guaranteed a record $5.5 million payday when the season’s final major begins next week.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Thursday, August 20, that total player compensation for this year’s tournament will reach a record $108 million. That represents a 20 per cent increase from last year and a 44 per cent jump compared with 2024.

The increase will benefit players throughout the draw, not just those competing for the title. Every player who makes the 128-player singles main draw will receive at least $140,000, the highest first-round payout in tennis history.

The rewards rise significantly as players progress. A quarterfinal appearance will be worth $780,000, while semifinalists will earn $1.45 million. The runner-up will receive $2.8 million, while the champion will collect the record $5.5 million prize.

The champions’ payout is up from the $5 million won by Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s tournament, when total player compensation stood at $90 million.

The increased financial rewards also extend beyond singles. The winning men’s, women’s and mixed doubles teams will split $1 million, with the runners-up receiving $500,000. The wheelchair singles champions will earn $104,000.

The USTA has also announced a new $2 million player support programme, with the initial funding divided equally between men’s and women’s players. The initiative is designed to provide additional benefits while complementing existing pension funds.

USTA CEO Craig Tiley called the investment a significant first step in a broader, multi-year effort to improve the financial opportunities available to players.

The announcement also comes with the creation of the Grand Slam Player Council, reflecting growing demands from players for greater involvement in decision-making and a larger share of revenue generated by the sport’s four biggest tournaments.

The US Open, therefore, is not just raising its prize purse, it is signalling a wider shift in how tennis players are rewarded and represented at the highest level.
