Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced on Wednesday that vehicles registered before 1975 will now be officially recognised as vintage vehicles , exempt from scrapping . The move comes under the newly introduced Vintage Vehicle Policy , aimed at preserving heritage automobiles and providing owners with legal recognition for vehicles 50 years or older .

Speaking at a press conference, Agnihotri, who also holds the transport portfolio , said the policy allows owners to register classic vehicles through a simplified process, ensuring they are preserved for future generations. Benefits includ e exemption from mandatory scrapping, easier documentation, and formal recognition und er state law.

The deputy chief minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to modernise transport services , noting that operations such as driving licence authentication, vehicle fitness certificates, and permits have been digitised and automated to improve efficiency and transparency.

He added that the transport department’s revenue has reached Rs 1,000 crore this financial year , up from Rs 500-600 crore under the previous government, reflecting an annual growth of 8 percent and the positive impact of reforms.

The Vintage Vehicle Policy serves multiple purposes: it protects vehicles of historical significance, supports owners with exemptions and formal registration, and encourages enthusiasts to preserve automotive heritage. By recognising classic cars and bikes legally, the state also promotes cultural appreciation while maintaining administrative oversight.

Himachal Pradesh joins other states in India that have introduced similar measures. Odisha was the first state to register vehicles over 50 years old under the vintage category, while Uttar Pradesh has also begun offering vintage registration with special number plates and exemptions from scrapping.

For ordinary citizens, the policy offers a chance to enjoy and learn from preserved classic vehicles, adding to the state’s cultural and heritage experience.

With this policy, Himachal Pradesh ensures that classic vehicles are legally protected , owners benefit from s implified procedures, and the state’s transport infrastructure continues to modernise while celebrating automotive history.
