₹500 Bonus, Faster Procurement: Telangana Strengthens Procurement System

With the Yasangi harvest gathering pace across Telangana, the state government has moved to fast-track paddy procurement in a bid to prevent distress sales and ensure timely support to farmers. In a significant push at the grassroots level, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy inaugurated a new procurement centre at G. Chennaram village in Nalgonda district and reviewed on-ground arrangements to ensure the system functions without bottlenecks.

The visit comes amid expectations of a bumper paddy output , with the state targeting procurement of nearly 90 lakh metric tonnes this season. Officials have been instructed to maintain strict oversight so that farmers do not face delays, harassment, or logistical hurdles while selling their produce. The minister made it clear that accountability will be enforced, warning of strict action against any lapses in the procurement process.

To make procurement farmer-friendly, the government is focusing on speed and decentralisation . Thousands of centres are being set up closer to villages, reducing the need for farmers to transport their produce over long distances. Authorities have also been directed to ensure that paddy meeting quality standards is quickly moved to rice mills, particularly in view of the rising summer temperatures , which can impact grain quality if delays occur.

A major incentive driving procurement this season is the ₹500 per quintal bonus for fine variety paddy, offered over and above the Minimum Support Price. This policy has encouraged farmers to cultivate premium varieties and has contributed to Telangana emerging as one of the leading states in paddy procurement in recent years. Past seasons have already seen record procurement levels crossing 70 lakh tonnes , benefiting lakhs of farmers through direct financial transfers.

Beyond immediate procurement, the government is also addressing structural gaps. Plans are underway to build large-capacity warehouses (around 30,000 metric tonnes) for IKP societies, which are expected to ease storage constraints and improve supply chain efficiency. Officials, millers, and civil supplies teams have been asked to work in close coordination to ensure that procurement remains time-bound and seamless , ideally completed within a week of crop arrival at centres.

Transparency remains a central focus of the initiative. By eliminating middlemen and ensuring direct payments into farmers’ bank accounts , the state aims to build trust and reduce exploitation. From weighing to payment processing, each stage is being streamlined to minimise delays and enhance efficiency.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Minister Komatireddy assured that every grain brought by farmers will be procured , underscoring a policy approach aimed at making agriculture both profitable and sustainable . However, the effectiveness of these measures will hinge on timely payments and efficient execution, especially given past concerns over delays in bonus disbursal.
