A severe heatwave has engulfed both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, pushing temperatures to alarming seasonal highs while signalling an imminent shift in weather conditions. In Telangana, the intensity peaked with 46°C recorded in Nizamabad , marking the highest temperature of the season , while several districts including Nalgonda, Nirmal, Siddipet, and Adilabad reported temperatures hovering around 45–46°C . The heat impact extended across the state, with Hyderabad experiencing its hottest day , as temperatures crossed 42°C in multiple locations, reflecting strong urban heat stress .

In Andhra Pradesh, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority reported widespread heat impact across 252 mandals , with temperatures exceeding 41°C in several districts. The highest temperature touched 45.9°C in Piduguralla , followed by Gudur and parts of Krishna and NTR districts, while 64 mandals remained under active heatwave conditions. The situation highlights the severity and geographic spread of the ongoing heatwave across both Telugu states.

Meteorological conditions, however, indicate that this extreme heat phase is nearing its peak, with a weather trough system extending from South Odisha to the Gulf of Mannar expected to trigger a rapid transition. Over the next 24–36 hours , thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to develop across both states. In Telangana, particularly in eastern districts such as Khammam, Mulugu, Warangal, and Suryapet , intense thunderstorms are expected, while Hyderabad may initially see isolated storms before stronger activity from May 6 onwards .

Similarly, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is forecast to witness thunderstorms followed by heavy rainfall around May 5 and 6 , which is expected to bring temporary relief from the oppressive heat. This evolving pattern represents a classic pre-monsoon transition , where prolonged heating destabilizes the atmosphere, leading to convective storm activity. Authorities have warned that the current phase is a multi-hazard situation , involving risks from heatstroke, lightning, and strong winds , and have urged people to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding peak sun exposure, and not taking shelter under trees during storms.
