450 cameras installed at Sabarimala for foolproof pilgrim security

In a major step to enhance safety during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage, authorities at Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple have installed 450 CCTV cameras, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance of the hill shrine and its sprawling premises. The move underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding lakhs of devotees visiting the temple this season.

The comprehensive monitoring system is a joint initiative of the Kerala Police and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), which manages the shrine. Specially arranged control rooms, manned by both police and TDB personnel, oversee the surveillance, allowing authorities to respond immediately to any emergencies, crowd surges, or unlawful activities.

Out of the total, approximately 90 cameras have been installed by the police along the key stretch from Chalakayam to Pandithavalam, covering major transit points and potential bottlenecks. The TDB has set up 345 cameras focusing on the pilgrimage path, resting areas, and significant locations within the temple premises, including Marakkoottam, Nadappanthal, Sopanam, the flyover, Malikappuram, and Pandithavalam.

This coordinated effort facilitates real-time information sharing between the police and the Board, strengthening crowd management and ensuring rapid response during any untoward incidents. The system is also designed to support rescue operations efficiently, enhancing overall security for pilgrims throughout their journey.

With this enhanced surveillance framework, the authorities aim to maintain a safe, orderly, and incident-free pilgrimage season at Sabarimala, reflecting a proactive approach to the challenges of managing one of India’s largest annual religious gatherings.
