The skies above Solang Nala in Himachal Pradesh’s picturesque Kullu district are set to become a testing ground for precision, skill and nerve as 42 pilots from six countries compete in a four-day Paragliding Accuracy Pre-World Cup that began on Friday.

Organised by the Manali Paragliding Association, the competition is being held at Solang Nala for the first time, adding a new international sporting dimension to a destination already known for its breathtaking mountain scenery and adventure tourism.

Pilots from India, Nepal, China, Turkey, Indonesia and South Korea are participating in the event, which also features teams from the Indian Air Force, Army and paramilitary forces. The championship includes two main categories, testing competitors’ ability to combine technical precision with control in challenging flying conditions.

Rajesh Dharmani, Himachal Pradesh’s Minister for Technical Education, Vocational and Industrial Training, and Town and Country Planning, inaugurated the event on Friday. He also tried paragliding during his visit, experiencing the adventure sport first-hand.

Dharmani said such competitions would help promote adventure sports across Himachal Pradesh and increase tourist footfall at different destinations. He added that the state government provides financial support for such activities and undertakes initiatives to encourage sports.

Safety will remain a key priority throughout the championship. Vedram Thakur, president of the Manali Paragliding Association, said strict safety standards would be enforced and only pilots certified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) would be eligible to compete.

The competition will see pilots take off from Fatru and land at Solang Nala, navigating a course that demands accuracy and control. Launching from an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, competitors will have to contend with the region’s demanding wind conditions.

Pilots Ankush and Sajan said the high wind speeds at the venue would make the competition particularly challenging, adding to the test of skill for participants.

Beyond the contest itself, the event offers Himachal Pradesh an opportunity to showcase its mountain landscape as a venue for organised international adventure sports. With participants from six countries and the involvement of military and paramilitary teams, the championship brings together competitive flying and the state’s broader ambition to strengthen its adventure tourism appeal.
