40 killed after crowd rush at Vijay’s public meeting

What was meant to be a massive show of strength for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), turned into unimaginable tragedy on Saturday, after a surge of people waiting for hours under the scorching sun led to one of Tamil Nadu’s worst stampedes in decades. At least 40 people, including 10 children, were killed, and over 70 others were injured, some of them critically, during the event in Karur.

According to Director General of Police G. Venkataraman, the disaster unfolded when thousands of supporters, far more than expected, packed into a narrow stretch of road near the venue hours before Vijay’s scheduled arrival. “As per the latest information, 40 people have died. It’s a deeply unfortunate and regrettable incident,” the DGP said in an early morning briefing.

Hours of waiting, no food or water

The trigger appears to have been a miscommunication about Vijay’s arrival. Police had cleared the rally to be held between 3 pm and 10 pm, but TVK’s official social media accounts announced he would arrive by noon. Supporters started gathering as early as 11 am, but the actor reached the stage only at 7:40 pm.

During those long, sweltering hours, many in the crowd had no access to food, water, or shade, and were crammed tightly into barricaded spaces. As heat and exhaustion grew, a sudden surge near one of the barricades caused several people to fall, and in moments, panic turned into a deadly stampede.

Overcrowding and poor planning

Organisers had told authorities they were expecting about 10,000 people, but police estimated that nearly 27,000 showed up. Security arrangements had been planned for around 20,000 attendees, but the overwhelming turnout left the 500-strong police force on duty unable to contain the situation.

“There were around 500 police personnel present, but since the event was held on a public road, deploying more could have restricted space even further,” the DGP said. Vijay was escorted safely to the venue and even thanked the police in his speech, but by that point, the situation outside had spiralled beyond control.

Heart-wrenching visuals emerge

Adding to the horror, videos from Karur hospitals have surfaced online showing the unimaginable grief of families who lost their loved ones. One particularly heart-wrenching clip shows a father carrying the lifeless body of his young son in his arms, desperately seeking help, an image that has come to symbolise the scale of human tragedy behind Saturday’s political rally.

Inquiry and accountability

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the causes, including possible organisational failures, communication lapses, and security negligence. Senior police officials, including the ADGP (Law & Order) and 10 SPs, have rushed to Karur to oversee the probe and relief operations.

What was meant to mark Vijay’s grand entry into politics now begins under a shadow of grief and outrage, raising serious questions about crowd safety, political responsibility, and how such preventable disasters continue to occur.
